Many of us own smart phones and drive intelligent cars, so isn’t it about time that you use technology to make your running smarter too? Here’s how I make the most of technology that allows me to track, record and analyse all of your running metrics AND run faster with tech running spikes.
GPS watches
GPS watches are increasingly becoming part of my running arsenal There are numerous different products on the market and it really comes down to personal preference as to exactly how much information you’d like from your runs. I have the FENIX 6X PRO which tracks everything. This martwatche allows me to track my health and fitness stats from my wrist, and the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Multisport GPS watch is an advanced bit of wrist candy that helps me boost my workout performance in the most extreme weather and sports environments.
Thanks to satellites in the sky, It provides tracking information, telling me where I’ve been as well as data on my distance and pace. It records my heart rate data and even information on my cadence and footfall.
So, its a great tools for collecting information on my running metrics which will enables me to monitor my progression and the effectiveness of my training program.
Keep track of your stats on-line
It’s now easier than ever to keep track of my stats on-line. With apps such as Garmin Connect, I am able to store, analyse and share all of my running metrics simply by uploading the data from my Garmin watch. I am able to do this wirelessly, so within minutes of returning from a run I will have a plethora of data at my fingertips. Pretty awesome!
Strava is another popular online tracking tool. It automatically uploads my data and can then compare my metrics with myself, running friends, and even pro athletes. One of Strava’s main features is the segment rankings, a leaderboard of all performances over segments (specific sections of road or trail).
Training Peaks
Training Peaks is a piece of software that enables both myself and my coach and nutritionalist to log and share running data and information about eating, supplementation,, and training. Essentially it’s an online training diary.
Whether an elite athlete or a casual competitor, a training diary is a a fantastic tool for many reasons. Not only does it serve as a great source of motivation when looking back at all the workouts that I’ve logged, it also enables me to objectively analyse why I am running well or maybe not so well. The fact that my training stats can be shared on-line with my coach makes the coach’s job of planning and programming far easier.
Running Shoes
I continue to find out what materials and technologies I should look for when choosing my next running shoe.
In the past five years I’ve seen major technological advances in both shoe construction and materials, creating an enormous variety for me to choose from in consideration of distance, speed, terrain, track, cross country, stability vs flats.
Without getting into Lighter Foam = Faster Running, Propulsion From Carbon Plates,, Can New Technologies Prevent Injury?, go ahead and explore the modern world of light and springy foams, carbon plates, and large stack height. I benefit from various styles. For example, many of the carbon-plated racing shoes help heel strikers lessen the impact on my joints and encourage my weight to shift forward. Choosing a light, resilient shoe isn’t just for racing — added to my quiver, they can enable me to increase overall mileage while staying fresh and strong.
Keep running. Have fun!
