“Everything happens for a reason.”
Too often I’ve heard this beautiful expression of trust foisted on people in pain. Don’t get me wrong; I believe in looking on the bright side. It is a great comfort to believe that God has everything in hand, no matter how bleak things seem.
But terrible things do happen. When they happen to us, we don’t need people to deflect our suffering with the shiny shield of optimism. We need them to sit with us in the unbearable, excruciating stew of our pain. This is what Jesus would do. Mysteriously, it is in that dark walk together that we begin to glimpse again the divine love we hope will one day answer all our questions.
God’s plan is beyond our understanding. We surrender to it together, believing that the Lord has much more to tell us one day even if we cannot bear it now. Lord, your ways are mysterious. Help me to trust in you.
